The selection of your targeted keywords is the most important step in search engine optimizing and keyword positioning your website. Keywords are the link for search engines to connect web searchers with the information they are looking for. Each indexed page is given a “score” based upon the relevant keywords utilized by the web designer. If you optimize your web page with the keywords that web searchers search with then, you WILL see a steady flow of traffic to your website.
When choosing webpage keywords, you must consider the words that a web searcher would use to find your specific web page. These may not be the exact words YOU might use to describe your website. If you are positioning a page about “NFL Football,” you might select “NFL football, NFL news, NFL trades, football teams” and others. However, if your web page is selling football equipment you might select “football gear, shoulder pads, cleats” and others. Both web pages have football in common, but have distinctive differences in the keywords a web searcher would use to find your page. Bringing web surfers to the content they are looking for is the key to high sales conversions.
The probability of keywords search terms matching the content of a web page is called Keyword Relevance. The targeted keywords for your website must be relevant or they will not “score” well and will not result in a high conversion of sales.
Keyword Phrases should be used to narrow the scope when the website theme would draw too much competition for the given keyword. When using broad terms like “cars” you are better served to choose keyword phrases such as “used cars” or “car parts”. Cars alone will draw three times the competiting pages as “new cars.” Carefully select your keyword phrases. If you are too specific, no one may search using the phrases you have selected … even though they may very accurately describe your website.
Keyword Density is the ratio of keywords to total word count. A 3% density will usually be very successful on most search engines. A keyword repeated 3-4 times in a total word count of 100 will be optimum. To retain a high keyword density, separate your webpages into themes.
Keyword Themes are achieved by uniting a common theme through the various pages of a website. The keywords targeted on the homepage should “summarize” the content of the site. For instance, a website relating to selling furniture could include homepage keywords such as “new furniture, used furniture, furniture designs and furniture information.” Your next level pages would focus more specifically on each of the keywords used on the homepage.
Stop Words Are common, non-specific words that will stop a spider’s indexing. They include “as, and, for, of am, is, etc.” Some search engine algorithms may ignore some popular phrases such as “Britney Spears” or “Free” because of the sheer volume of references.
REMEMBER – You must have the correct keywords or your #1 ranking means nothing …. because nobody will ever search with them.
